Mary Plunkett – Read Carefully

I recently started working on my own family tree again instead of just working on other peoples’.  I’ve set aside Tuesday nights for this purpose when I attend a local family history group.

I hadn’t got anywhere with researching Mary Plunkett, my 2x great grandmother, for a number of years.  I knew that she married George James Hayward in Adelaide, South Australia on 4 Sep 1849 but little else.

I looked at www.familyhistorysa.info, which I had checked before, but this time noticed in the list of children, of Thomas Plunkett, the letters M y.

My is listed, on the site, as an abbreviation for Mary.  I had looked at this many times without seeing it.  I now have so much more to check to see if this is my Mary.  A pertinent reminder to myself to read everything carefully.

That’s a really easy one to miss Kylie! Going back to re-check – especially when you are stuck – is great advice.

My is a word too so easy to skip over and also an odd abbreviation for Mary, at least I haven’t seen it often. It always pays to review your research for new resources or just a fresh look. I like your advice about dedicating personal family research time too.

It’s certainly helping my own family tree having the set time to work on it and it encourages me to fit in an extra bit here and there on other days too instead of thinking it’s too much to get into right now. Thanks for your comment!!

It’s so easy sometimes to miss what’s staring at us in the face…or as cryptic as M y. Let’s hope this is the breakthrough you need.

Good one Kylie…..so easy to over look things. St Marys is one we had. St Marys in the town they lived in and presumed it was the same they married in, but one day just looked at the marriage cert. and yes….St Marys in another town. Never seen Mary abbreviated but will now keep in mind. Cheers Ros

Thanks Ros, that would be annoying with St Mary churches in two different places.
