Faith!

This is a quote from one of my facebook friends.

” When you come to the edge of all the light you know, and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, FAITH is knowing one of two things will happen: There will be something solid to stand on or you will be taught how to fly.”

“Why Don’t Students Like School?” Well, Duhhhh… | Psychology Today

Someone recently referred me to a book that they thought I’d like. It’s a 2009 book, aimed toward teachers of grades K through 12, titled Why Don’t Students Like School? It’s by a cognitive scientist named Daniel T. Willingham, and it has received rave reviews by countless people involved in the school system. Google the title and author and you’ll find pages and pages of doting reviews and nobody pointing out that the book totally and utterly fails to answer the question posed by its title.

Willingham’s thesis is that students don’t like school because their teachers don’t have a full understanding of certain cognitive principles and therefore don’t teach as well as they could. They don’t present material in ways that appeal best to students’ minds. Presumably, if teachers followed Willingham’s advice and used the latest information cognitive science has to offer about how the mind works, students would love school.

Dash Blog

I’m using a Firefox addon called Dash Blog which lets you share webpage content on your blog from the page you’re visiting so that you don’t have to go to your blog and upload a graphic or link to a video. I’m finding though that when I use the screenshot option it takes a full shot of the page but when it’s posted to Blogger it cuts out half of the image. I wonder if this is a problem with Dash blog or Blogger. It doesn’t pick up images from a page very well either although it says that this feature is still being developed.

Does anyone know of any other tools which will do this? I would like to be able to share videos, text and images. There is a ‘Share on Facebook’ browser button which I use and it works well is there something around like that perhaps? Does anyone else use Dash Blog and get the same results?

Harts for Africa

Greg Hart was one of the guests yesterday at Salt Church and spoke via mobile phone from Mozambique, I was really impressed with his use of technology for teaching and want to find out more! Teen Challenge/I may be able to use or adapt some of his methods for our work.

From their blog
“We enjoy seeing Africans building churches from local resources providing the example that can be repeated time and time again. We are committed to seeing the African church demonstrating the love of Christ through community development.”
