Re: Why Home Educate?

Hi Henry
Thanks for your comment about reasons to home educate! I’m glad people do read my blog 🙂

You mentioned one of your reasons to home educate was so that your daughters didn’t lose their love of learning. That’s an excellent reason and I totally agree with it. I hope your daughters continue to love learning all through their lives!

Henry’s blog is called Why Homeschool – “On this blog we explore why homeschooling is usually a better option for children than public schools. We’ll also explore homeschooling issues in general, educational thoughts, and some other random stuff.”

Website Linking

I was asked to provide a link to best-kid-games-online.com. I’m not going to provide a link because I don’t want this to become a ‘link blog’ just to promote unknown people’s websites. If you want to look at the site go ahead. It appears to have some educational games as well as just game games.

Also, the best kid games website doesn’t promote free and open source software. I like to think I’m an ethical person but as far as free and open source software goes I don’t have an over-riding ethical standpoint. I use and teach all different types of software (open source, closed source, free, shareware, demoware, commercial) depending upon the need at the time. I’d like to be able to say that not providing a link to the best kid games website is for ethical reasons but it isn’t. If you’d like to read about ethical reasons for free and open source software go to The Free Software Foundation.

Lace Making & More

My Mum is teaching us Bobbin Lace making! It’s cool and who’s the best at it so far? Douglas! He has an incredible knack for handicrafts. I don’t have any photos of our work to post at the moment but I will soon. There are a couple of photos and a description at wikipedia.

Jessica has a role in a local production of “Joseph And His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”. We watched the dvd (old movie converted to dvd) the other day so that Jessica could see the whole rock opera. It’s available on Amazon. I haven’t put the link in because it’s huge. Donny Osmond plays Joseph. Donny Osmond! I haven’t seen him for ages. We’ll also be reading the story from the Bible (it’s in the first chapter of the Bible – Genesis). Joseph went from Canaan to Egypt so I’ll throw in a bit of Egypt study too. At the moment we’re reading about Moses and the Israelites’ trip from Egypt to Canaan from the book of Exodus in the Bible. We’re studying ancient and current maps and we’re making our own maps tracing the journey too, discussing themes in the text and reading comprehension. We’re covering a number of subjects here – English, Maths, Geography, Social Studies, History. I love it, I’m learning right along with the kids 🙂

Why Home Educate?

This is one of the most common questions I’m asked. If you’re considering home education for your children or if you’ve just wondered why, this is for you.

I’ve chosen home education for my children for several reasons.

1. I feel learning happens better in a small group or one on one environment.

2. I believe that the home was designed to be the training ground for children and parents the best teachers. Traditionally children learnt from their parents – continuing the family business or starting businesses of their own.

3. I can cater to each child’s individual needs, strengths and weaknesses.

4. Peer pressure, drugs, bullying are lessened.

5. Subjects studied reflect our personal values and ethics.
