Asthma & Medication Side Effects

Been off work with a sinus infection and asthma. Got a new asthma preventative medication Symbicort. The doctor said I wouldn’t get the same side effects which I get from Ventolin – increased heart rate, shaking, anxiety, tears. Read the leaflet that came with it. It didn’t say anything about side effects. Started taking it as prescribed. Side effects are increased heart rate, anxiety, tears, headaches (different from sinus headaches), nausea, dizziness, lethargy, inability to think. Went online and found this Medicine Guide which lists the same side effects I’ve experienced. The only thing I’m not sure on is if the nausea is from the antibiotics or the symbicort.

It’s only today that I’ve actually been able to think straight enough to type this. My energy is fading now though as this is my second post today.

Hi. About sinus issues, I saw this thing on tv (oprah with Dr. Oz) about nasal cleaning (mild salt-water). The last 2 times I had pollen/sinus pains, I tried it. A bit odd to feel water up your nose, but I avoided the need for my usual sudaphed. Google for info. HTH from the USA.

I had asthma as a kid and fully got over it by playing a wind instrument – the clarinet. Since my teens I have never had it. I think the clarinet strengthened my lungs. I would recomend playing a wind instrument because of what it did for me. Just recently I came across an interesting article on the BBC titled “Housework ‘can cause asthma” . Read this, it may help to know how it can be triggered.

Hi, thanks for the message. You mentioned playing a wind instrument helped you with your asthma. I’ve played the flute for the last 25 years and I’m sure it’s helped.

It is too bad that the old generic albuterol asthma inhalers have recently been banned. Now ashtma sufferers like yourself our stuck with drugs like Ventolin that have major side effects and cost twice as much.

Believe it or not the American Lung Association is actually one of the main supporters behind the ban of the CFC’s. More information can be found in an on-line article in the US News and World Report dated August 2007. (See second link below). They receive huge funding from the drug companies and the drug companies want the Generics (CFC’s) to go away. Below is a link to the petition to bring back the CFC’s.
